I was really hesitant about this piano teaching series because it starts out numbering the fingers instead of teaching notes. However, I am now a believer. My six year old moved quickly through the material and didn't lose interest mostly because she started with the numbered fingers and progressed from there. I highly recommend these books as an effective system for teaching piano.

Even for the most basic beginner, cute, thoughtful songs that could easily be performed for a beginning pianist recita.

I did a lot of looking for piano instruction books, and the Alfred Series is fabulous! This book was referenced from the Basic Course and corresponds to the level the student is at ~ and it makes teaching so simple. One of the things I like best is the great variety of songs - that are actually fun to learn - I highly recommend this book for the younger beginner student.

This book seems like it teaches good, but, hardly any of the songs are songs you would recognize.
Child lost interest very quickly (about 5 minutes), and switched to another book with popular nursery rymmes like Mary had a little lamb, etc.
